XJ ARB SNORKEL






Parts Needed
ARB Safari Snorkel for Jeep XJ 95+
Mopar "push in" retainers for the wheel well inserts
Assorted zip ties Zip ties
Tools Needed

lock tite red
3" hole saw/ dremel/ cutting tool of your choice
Eye protection & gloves
Pop Rivet Gun

Not really too bad, better if you don't have A/C...*. In my case I had previously installed a Rustys Airtube with K&N filter. I had also added some extra horns where the stock airbox was so I had to backtrack making the project take longer than it should have. The kit I got was also apparently for a Jeep without A/C because they wanted me to mount the new washer fluid container where my A/c is ....if you're doing the project in your garage I suggest you use up all your washer fluid before you start...

1. First thing to do is to pull out the stock airbox and wheel well inserts. Instructions said to remove the front wheel but I didn't find it necessary at all.


2. Now you'll want to remove the stock washer fluid resovior. If yours is full like mine was you get to make a nice mess dissconnecting it.


3. Next thing is to cut your stock airbox and attach the ARB adapter. I didn't have a pop rivet gun so I used some locknuts and bolts. I also used a liberal amount of RTV. Here you can see the adapter attached and the piece I had to remove.


There are some other holes in the stock airbox that I aslo went back and sealed. The instructions said nothing about them...

4. Here you can see the first attempt at me cutting a hole to fit the new airbox setup through. My hole saw was junk so I tried to make due with the dremel... not really very round is it? Hole also had to move forward a good inch from what you see.... that's what I get for measuring once...


5. Next you get to tape the paper template on. We tried our best but weren't sure if it was supposed to form fit around the bend in the fender or not... we still aren't sure either.


6. After drilling your pilot holes you get to enlarge the smaller holes and cut out another big hole. Dremel worked great on this hole and didn't flake the paint at all with its cutting wheel. Once you have the hole the correct size, make sure you touch them up to help prevent rust.


7. Now you get to do a test fit to mark and drill the holes for the a pillar bracket. We followed ARB instructions to the letter, and our first test fit had the snorkel hitting the door. We were less than pleased. We had to go back and enlarge the holes for the body upwards so that the snorkel fit properly. We also had to drill new holes in the A pillar bracket because the holes provided would have meant putting screws dangerously close to the windshield(see pic), and we also didn't want to drill extra holes in the a pillar. Here's what it looks like in the end with lots of space for the door.


8. When you are finally happy with the snorkel body mount position you can go ahead and attach all the hoses. Before you close the wheel well back up, you'll want to attach the washer fluid relocation kit. For my XJ the location in the instructions for the new container wasn't going to happen. So I decided to zip tie it to the brake fluid resovior untill I had some more time to figure it out. On top of that you can see how the provided bracket had holes that don't exactly match up.


9. It's not for everyone, but here is the final look.


Best part of all is that the whistle that accompanied my bored out TB seems to be gone. I can still hear it whistle, but only if I'm trying too....

UPDATE:
I was a little less than happy with the washer fluid resovoir that came with the snorkel. While at the parts yard the other day I found a new resovoir out of a earlier model XJ that mounts between the brake booster and air filter housing.

I re-used the motors that come on my 00, so I had to ream out the holes of the resovoir a little bit, and I had to sauter new connectors on for the fluid level float. I also had to "smoosh" the side that is next to the brake booster, but other than that it is a perfect fit. Now I can hold about twice as much fluid too.
